HAMLET — Members of the Richmond County Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Committee gathered last week on the corner of Main Street and the road now partially named in honor of the slain civil rights leader.
The new signs have been up about a month, and the location the group met was across the street from the John Coltrane Blue Room.
The Hamlet City Council voted in January to rename a section of Bridges Street to Martin Luther King Jr. Street.
That section runs from Main Street, northeast to U.S. 74 Business, with Hamlet Avenue being the only other crossing.
Longtime local pastor Tommy Legrand asked city leaders if the street could be extended out to Gin Mill Road.
At the time of the decision, Mayor Amy Guinn said the City Council “felt like that would be a very visible part of the street, but also one we would not get much opposition” from residents who would have to change their address.
