LAURINBURG — The Scotland County Sheriff’s Office is hosting the second-annual Cook-Off for the Kids later this month to benefit the “Our House” Tri-County Child Advocacy Center.

The center, located at Harrington Square in downtown Rockingham, serves kids in Richmond, Scotland and Anson counties.

The mission of the center, according to a 2024 press release, is to: “operate a multi-disciplinary team to respond and address child abuse allegations through the coordination of professional services for children and to provide counseling, medical examinations, forensic interviews, victim support and advocacy, law enforcement intervention and other resources within these local communities.”

According to Kelly Kirk, CAC coordinator, the center opened in September 2023 and had 24 kids pass through the doors that year. Kirk said the CAC saw 111 kids last year and, as of April 8, had seen 38 children so far this year.

The cost to compete is $50 per team, and registration is from 7-8 a.m., with chicken and ribs on the grill from 8 a.m.-3 p.m.

In addition to the barbecue competition, there is entertainment slated for the event, including:

  • J.B. Rader, Steven Tickle and Jerry Benson from “Moonshiners” and Big Nick Callo from “Moonshiners: Master Distiller”
  • Ron and Amy Shirley from “Lizard Lick Towing”
  • Comedian Graeson McGaha
  • Band Killing Fiction

The event — which runs from 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. on Main Street in Laurinburg — will also feature a car show, vendors and “moonshine tasting.”
