Candidates planning to file for the upcoming municipal elections will have until noon on Friday if they want to be on the ballot this fall.

Records with the N.C. State Board of Elections show several incumbents and challengers have filed for races in Ellerbe, Hoffman and Rockingham.

Christopher West has filed to challenge Rockingham Mayor John Hutchinson in November.

Matt DeMay has also jumped into the race for Rockingham City Council, joining Greg Leberth and incumbents Debbie Wrenn and Denise Sullivan.

The seats held by Sullivan, Wrenn and Councilman Gene Willard are up for reelection and Willard has yet to file.

Hoffman Town Council incumbents Kyonna Jones and Cynthia Northcutt have filed this week, following fellow Councilmen Daniel Kelly, Kevin Rory Jones and Riccardo Anderson.

April Watkins is challenging for one of those seats, and no one has filed to run as mayor.

Current Ellerbe Town Council members Jean Fletcher and Bennett Hawks have filed, as have challengers Martin Chavis III and Jimmy Bowles. Elise Freeman had already signed up to run.

As reported earlier this week, former mayor Lee Berry and current Councilman Jeremy McKenzie are both running for mayor.

The ballot for Hamlet so far remains the same, with Mayor Amy Guinn unchallenged and the following running for city council: incumbents Tony Clewis and Eddie Martin; and newcomers Esco Latimer and Amber Daniels.

Dobbins Heights Town Clerk and Mayor Pro Tem Tyre Holloway and Councilwoman Angeline David will both be running in their community’s election in October.
