ROCKINGHAM — In a stirring tribute to America’s heroes, the General Henry William Harrington Chapter, NSDAR, joined forces with a local homeschool group to create a breathtaking Field of Honor at Eastside Cemetery in Rockingham.
More than 450 American flags were placed on the graves of veterans, transforming the cemetery into a sea of red, white and blue in advance of Veterans Day.
Eastside Cemetery is the final resting place for approximately 600 veterans, representing every branch of the U.S. military and spanning conflicts from World War I, World War II, Korea and Vietnam.
Among the honored were veterans whose service included pivotal moments in history: the Battle of the Bulge, where American forces helped turn the tide of WWII in Europe; and the harrowing Bataan Death March, endured by U.S. and Filipino soldiers after the fall of the Philippines in 1942.
Each flag stood as a symbol of sacrifice and valor, honoring those who served in combat, supported operations, and upheld the freedoms we cherish today. From infantrymen and medics to pilots and engineers, these veterans played vital roles in shaping the course of American history.
The chapter’s commitment to honoring veterans continues through its sponsorship of Eastside Cemetery in Wreaths Across America. WAA is a national nonprofit whose mission is to remember the fallen, honor those who serve, and teach the next generation the value of freedom. Each December, volunteers across the country place live balsam wreaths on veterans’ graves, speaking their names aloud to ensure their legacy lives on.
This mission aligns seamlessly with the DAR’s own purpose: to preserve history, promote education, and inspire patriotism. Through projects like the Field of Honor and WAA, the General Henry William Harrington Chapter brings these values to life — uniting generations in service and remembrance.

In the hush of Eastside Cemetery, where flags ripple and wreaths will soon rest, we remember not just names etched in stone — but lives lived in service, battles fought for freedom, and legacies that demand our gratitude. Let us rise to honor them — not just today, but always.
