As a thin layer of ice blankets the area from Winter Storm Fern, several local government bodies will be closed on Monday.
Rockingham announced late Friday that all of its offices will be closed Jan. 26, though “essential emergency personnel” will remain in operation.
Pending road conditions, the city’s garbage collection will resume Feb. 27, with Monday and Thursday routes being collected on Tuesday and Thursday, and Tuesday and Friday routes being collected Wednesday and Friday.
The county government announced Saturday that all of its box sites would be closed Sunday and all county operations will be closed Monday, with business expected to resume on Tuesday.
Ellerbe Town Hall will also be closed on Monday, with business and garbage collection scheduled to resume Tuesday.
Mayor Lee Berry posted videos to his Facebook page Sunday morning showing condidtions both in town and near the Berry Patch.
Hamlet City Manager John Terziu issued a press release on the city’s Facebook page Sunday saying offices there would also be closed Monday.
“Our employees are our most important asset, and I am not willing to accept unnecessary risk to the safety of our team or their families,” Terziu said. “Safety always comes first.”
However, he added that “critical personnel” will remain on duty.
“I ask that you keep our Emergency Services and Public Works teams in your thoughts and prayers,” Terziu said. “They are the reason we sleep safely at night and why our critical infrastructure continues to operate during challenging conditions.”
Dobbins Heights has not made an announcment regarding closure, but did declare a state of emergency on Friday.
Richmond County Schools is expected to make an announcement by 5 p.m.
