ROCKINGHAM — Although Halloween has yet to arrive, one local business already has a Christmas tree on display.
Hanging on that tree, at Nana’s Coffee Rocks in downtown Rockingham, are envelopes containing the wish lists of senior citizens from across Richmond County.
This is the sixth consecutive year owner Sherry Roberts has participated in Richmond County Aging Services’ Adopt-a-Senior program, starting in 2021 when she was the manager of the Speckled Paw.
Pam Hill, office and nutrition assistant for Aging Services, started the program several years ago, originally focusing on Meals on Wheels recipients. However, it was expanded in 2021 to serve more clients.
This year, there are around 100 seniors on the list.
Requested items include various things to keep warm including heaters, blankets, flannel pajamas and gowns, sheet sets and bedroom shoes; in addition to household cleaning supplies, lotion and adult diapers, according to Hill.
Seniors are also asking for bottled water and nutritional drinks like Boost and Ensure, as well pet food and toys for both dogs and cats.
The tree at Nana’s went up the morning of Oct. 22 with 50 envelopes — and five had been taken by 11 a.m.
The deadline to drop off gifts for the adopted seniors is Dec. 7 at either the coffee shop or Aging Services.
The 46th annual Senior Christmas Party is moving to the Agape Center at Sidney Grove Church of Deliverance in Ellerbe and will be spread over two days, 10:30 a.m.-2 p.m. Dec. 9-10.
Tickets are $5 for seniors and $10 for caregivers and will go on sale Nov. 18.
Aging Services is also hosting a canned food drive from Nov. 18-Dec. 2. Donations can be dropped off at any senior center.
