ROCKINGHAM — A man already in jail accused of trying to steal copper in May is facing a new charge after his alleged co-conspirator reportedly died from injuries sustained during the incident.
Allen Joseph Subero, 42, of Center Street in Cordova and the late Corey Shane Dorsey, also from the Cordova area, were allegedly trying to steal copper from an AT&T cable at the intersection of Ledbetter Street and Rosalyn Road in the late hours of May 2 and early hours of May 3.
(NOTE: The original warrant lists the incident date as May 9-10.)
According to the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office, the telephone pole — installed in 1963 — broke at its base “under the stress of the cable being pulled.”
Doresy was reportedly struck by the pole and taken to Subero’s home. Doresy was later taken to FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital-Richmond for treatment, then transported to the trauma center at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill.
According to a previous warrant, Dorsey sustained traumatic brain injury and fractures to his spine and ribs.
Subero was arrested May 14 and initially charged with one felony count each of injury to property to obtain nonferrous metals greater than or equal to $10,000 and injury to property to obtain nonferrous metals with subsequent injury.
Dorsey later died from his injuries, according to the sheriff’s office, leading to Subero being charged May 29 with injury to obtain nonferrous metals where a person is killed.
According to the sheriff’s office, Subero has several aliases, including: Bo Subero, A.J. Subero, Allen Joseph Subero Jr., Allan Sabaro, Rick Allen Hunsucker, Ricky Hunsacker, Ricky Allen Hansacker and Rickey Hunsacker.
“Investigators are actively researching Subero and his various aliases and anticipate additional charges as the investigation continues,” Sheriff Mark Gulledge said in a press release.
Online jail records show Subero was charged May 20 with felony larceny and injury to real property. The sheriff’s office said those are related to an order for arrest from a 2024 case. However, the RO could not find that case in online court records.
Subero is being held in the Richmond County Jail on a combined $205,000 secured bond. His next court appearance on the latest charge is scheduled for June 11. His next court date on the initial charges is Aug. 6.
“Investigators have devoted considerable time and resources to combating nonferrous metal thefts in the East Rockingham and Cordova communities,” reads the press release from the sheriff’s office. “Their efforts have led to multiple arrests and the identification of further suspects in other cases across Richmond County, including incidents involving solar farms.”
In addition to Subero, the sheriff’s office has charged at least eight individuals with metal-related crimes since mid-April.
All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
