THOMASVILLE — Finally getting a chance to hit the diamond to start the Area 3 Conference playoffs, the Hamlet Junior American Legion baseball team came up a few runs short against the top seed Tuesday.
After two days of rain kept them from playing, the No. 8 Junior 49ers lost to No. 1 South Rowan Post 342 by a final score of 6-2.
Hamlet scored one run in both the fifth and sixth innings of the opening game of the double-elimination postseason tournament.
South Rowan scored three runs in the third and added two insurance runs in the fifth. Post 342 brought in its final run in the sixth frame.
Noah Trexler pitched a complete game for Post 49. He threw six innings and allowed six runs (four earned) on eight hits and had one strikeout.
Hamlet had just two hits in the game – a double by Dean Cottle and a single by Cooper Perkins.
Cottle led off the top of the fifth with a two-bagger and later scored with two outs when Jackson Parsons reached on an error.
Post 49’s second run of the game came an inning later when Jake Smith (hit-by-pitch) scored on a passed ball. That run made it a 4-2 deficit at the time.
Hamlet (6-8) will face Kannapolis Post 115 in an elimination game Wednesday. The game will be played at North Moore High School and start at 7:30 p.m.
