ROCKINGHAM — The next group of former Richmond Senior High School coaches, student-athletes and legacy members to be inducted into the Raider Athletic Hall of Fame will be decided later this school year.
The school’s selection committee announced this month that nominations for the Hall of Fame Class of 2025 are now open through Feb. 6.
A multi-year initiative spearheaded by former head principal Jim Butler came to fruition in 2023 when Richmond named its inaugural class, which had a dozen members.
Divided into three categories — coaches, players and legacy members — the 2023 induction class featured two coaches, eight players and two legacy members.
Those inducted during the May 22, 2023, celebration at Cole Auditorium were coaches Darryl Barnes and George Whitfield, players Walter Ellerbe, Melvin Ingram, Kathy Ormsby, Mike Quick, Tali Robich, Franklin Stubbs, Mike Thomas and Whitney Wright, and legacy members Dr. Bill Haltiwanger and G.R. Kindley.
While the school is now under the direction of first-year head principal Joyce McRae, and James Johnson is in his first year as Richmond’s athletic director, the goal remains the same — “to celebrate the legacy of Raider athletics.”
The selection committee has laid out the following requirements for each category in order for someone to be eligible for nomination:
Student-Athletes
Coaches
Legacy Members
A “nomination does not guarantee induction,” the school said in a Facebook post on its Raider Athletics page.
McRae said the inductees for the Class of 2025 will be officially named later this spring and an induction ceremony will be held in May.
