HAMLET — The first week of the season concluded for the Hamlet American Legion junior baseball team Thursday.
Unable to return to the win column, Hamlet dropped its second of three games to start the summer slate.
Hosting HiToms Post 87, the Junior 49ers lost 12-0 in six innings.
Hamlet trailed by a run after the first inning and fell behind 4-0 after three complete frames.
Post 87 added two runs in the fourth and scored three runs in both the fifth and sixth innings to end the game early.
Three pitchers were used for Post 49 — Colton Trexler (3.1 innings), Conner Locklear (2.1 innings) and Jeffery Dieffenbach (0.1 innings).
Trexler allowed six earned runs on eight hits and struck out four batters, while three of Locklear’s six runs were earned to go with five hits and one K.
Dieffenbach faced just one batter and got the out on a pop out in foul territory to catcher Noah Wilson.
Defensively, Hamlet struggled for the second straight game and committed five errors in the field.
At the plate, Post 49 collected just two hits in the loss. Emery Owens and Jaxton Watson each singled.
Owens, Watson, Jake Smith and Willie Hooks were Hamlet’s other base runners. They each reached via a walk.
The next scheduled game for the Junior 49ers (1-2, 1-1 Area 3) is Tuesday against Pittsboro Post 283. The game will be played at the Lee County Athletic Park and start at 7 p.m.
