OBITUARY: Beverly Seawell Carnes

Beverly Seawell Carnes, 87, of Rockingham, passed away peacefully at Richmond County Hospice Haven on April 11, 2025.

Beverly was born May 18, 1937 in Rockingham to the late Herman Cole Seawell and the late Ellon Stogner Seawell.

 Beverly graduated from Rockingham High School in 1955 and from Wake Forest College in 1959. She was a lifelong educator and beloved teacher, having taught at Page High School in Greensboro,  Hialeah Jr. High School in Miami, Florida, Rockingham High School and Richmond Senior High School. She earned a Masters degree in Education Administration from UNC-Pembroke and served as assistant principal at Richmond Senior High School until she retired after nearly 40 years in education.

Beverly was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church in Rockingham where she was a member of the choir. 

Along with her parents, Beverly was preceded in death by her husband, Richard W. Carnes; sisters, Mary C. Seawell Ratliff and Virginia F. Seawell Donald; and brother, Herman Cole Seawell Jr.

Left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Jennifer Richardson Byrd of Rockingham; son Dann Richardson, Jr. of Eureka Springs, Arkansas; grandchildren, Garrett Cole Hayes of Glassboro, New Jersey, and Holli Danielle Hayes Cranford of Calabash; sister, Ellon Seawell Barlow of Fayetteville; and numerous beloved nieces, nephews and cousins. 

The details of a memorial service for Beverly are incomplete at this time due to the impending birth of Beverly’s precious twin great-grandbabies.

A memorial service will be Saturday, May 31, 2025 at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church with the Rev. Jack Lee officiating. The family will receive friends 1-2 p.m. prior to the service at the church.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to: Richmond County Hospice, 1119 N. U.S. Highway 1, Rockingham, NC 28379; or First Baptist Church, 201 N. Randolph St., Rockingham, NC 28379.
