OBITUARY: Boyce Lee Carpenter Jr.

Posted

Boyce Lee Carpenter Jr., 76, of Hamlet, passed away peacefully Friday, April 18, 2025 at Richmond County Hospice Haven, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born March 20, 1949, in Richmond County, son of the late Boyce Lee Carpenter Sr. and Viola Forbis Carpenter.

Boyce was an active member of East Rockingham United Methodist Church prior to his declining health.  He consistently worked maintenance in the church as well as groundskeeper.  He took pride in beautification of the church inside and out.  Several years ago, Boyce was instrumental in establishing the Community Thanksgiving meal at the church and it now serves over 2,000 people at Thanksgiving.

Golfing and fishing with friends at the beach were a few of his enjoyments as well as long, scenic rides, and he loved listening to beach music on WLWL.  Boyce also coached baseball and soccer in his earlier years and was instrumental in bringing soccer to Hamlet.

More importantly than everything he loved, his most prized possession was his family.  Boyce was a loving husband, father and Papa.  He loved his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and enjoyed spending time with them, watching them play sports or taking them fishing.  He will be dearly missed.

Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Kathy Carpenter and Faye Carpenter.

Left to cherish Boyce’s memories are his wife of 57 years, Marlene Lamont Carpenter of the home; daughter, Kathy Carpenter Liles (Spencer) of Hamlet; son, Chris Carpenter (Nina) of Hamlet; grandchildren, Jessaka Hair (Elton), Abbi Davis (Hunter), Dylan Carpenter (Cameron), Arin Liles and Drew Carpenter; great-grandchildren, Kendall Hair, Ansley Davis, Leo Hair and Waylon Hair; and niece, Jamie Perkins.

Visitation will be Monday, April 21, 2025 from 6-8 p.m. at Harrington Funeral Home, Hamlet.

The Celebration of Life service will be Tuesday, April 22, 2025 at 1 p.m. at East Rockingham United Methodist Church with Pastor Michael Griffin and Chevonne Wallace officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to: East Rockingham UMC, P.O. Box 1506, Rockingham, NC 28379; or Richmond County Hospice, 1119 N. U.S. Highway 1, Rockingham, NC 28380.
