OBITUARY: Camie Mitchum Greene

Posted

It is with great sadness that the family of Camie “Mitch” Mitchum Greene shares the news of her passing on Oct. 23, 2024.

“Mitch” was born on Sept. 25, 1929 in Vance, South Carolina, to Cassie Pinckney and Josephine Jackson Mitchum.

Following graduation from Holly Hill High School in Holly Hill, South Carolina, she applied to and was accepted at the Hamlet Hospital School of Nursing in Hamlet. There she was given what became her lifelong nickname, “Mitch.” She graduated from the program in 1950 and successfully completed her licensure exams becoming a Registered Nurse.

“Mitch” married the late Donald B. “Sonny” Greene in January of 1951 and they were blessed with three children, Donna (Hickory and Blowing Rock), Don (Rockingham) and Jeff (Marston).

Mitch was the consummate nurse working with Dr. Hugh Queen in his office for over 30 years and was beloved by her patients and their families. Her focus on care and compassion was equally given to every patient that she encountered regardless of race or socio-economic status.

No matter how many hours she had worked, she always found time for her church, First Baptist-Hamlet, her children’s schools, and civic groups. At First Baptist, she served as a choir member, Sunday school teacher, WMU director, and in many other capacities. From Fairview Heights to Richmond Senior High, she was an involved parent and particularly enjoyed assisting with the music programs at the schools. She was a member and officer of the Hamlet Women’s Club, the Auxiliary of the Hamlet/Sandhills Hospital, the Red Hat Society, and the Hamlet Hospital School of Nursing Alumni group.

Affectionately known as “Greene” to her grandchildren and subsequently to many others, her cooking skills were enjoyed by all. There was always fresh “Granny Bread” and a dessert to be shared. She and “Pop” were always willing to lend a helping hand either at their home in Hamlet or if needed to travel to Georgia. The beauty of her azaleas in the spring, the many varieties of camellia blossoms in the winter and the jars of jams, jellies, and blue-ribbon pickles reflected her love of flowers and gardening. Like her love, food and blossoms were regularly shared with others and greatly appreciated.

“Mitch” leaves a lifetime of beautiful memories to her daughter, Donna Greene Whitt, and sons, Don and Jeff Greene. Joining them in sharing her legacy are their families: son-in-law, Fred Whitt, Matthew, Julia, Oliver and Eliza Whitt; Daniel, Whitney, Lucy, Penny Greene, and McKay Whitt; daughter-in-law, Jamie Allen Greene, Ben Greene, Robert, Trina, McKinzie, Ryder and River Greene; Courtney, Jason, Trent and Rhett Deane; Wesley, Chasity, Ayden, Alyssa, Ashton and Amelia Allen; Meredith, Madeline, and Will Norwood; daughter-in-law, Jenni Greene, Thomas, Meagan and Harris Greene; Ethan, Joanna, and Finley Greene; Brooke Simmons, Troy Crouse, Jenna Grace Greene, Connor Hudson and Jackson Greene.

She is also survived by her brother, Cassie Pinckney Mitchum; sister-in-law, Sylvia Greene; dearest friend and the children’s godmother, Mary Snyder. Also, her family wishes to acknowledge the love she shared with many members of her Mitchum and Greene families as well as dear friends.
