OBITUARY: Carol Joyce Quick Howard

Carol Joyce Quick Howard, 95 years old, joined the company of saints on Wednesday, May 28, 2025.

She was born on Oct. 16, 1929 in Marlboro County, South Carolina, the first child of Foster Hilton and Bertha Mae (Judy) Brigman Quick.

She was a member of the Hamlet High School, Class of 1947 and a member of the Athenian Book Club. She was an active member of Hamlet First Presbyterian Church where she served many capacities such as Sunday school teacher, deacon, elder, clerk of session and Presbyterian Women.

In 1991, she was awarded the PW Life Membership. In 2014, she was awarded the Presbytery of Charlotte Outstanding Older Adult Award and in 2017 she was awarded Elder Emeritus at Hamlet First Presbyterian. She was also the lead teacher at Hamlet First Presbyterian Weekday Kindergarten for 23 years and she always stated she was able to teach the best and brightest children of Richmond County and especially of Hamlet.

On March 1, 1953, she married Bennie Moore Howard and this began her life of an Army wife. She loved her travels and embraced every place the family was stationed. They were married 58 years until Bennie’s passing in 2011.

Preceding her in death, along with her parents and her husband, are her brothers, James C. Quick and Richard E. Quick; her sisters, Shirley Q. Fields and Emily Faye Quick; and her granddaughter, Jennifer L. Howard.

She is survived by her children, Bennie Hill Howard (Robin), Susan H. Smith, Kimberly H. Pence (Bill) and Joel Moore Howard (Julie). She is also survived by her grandchildren, Rebekah S. Burleson (Jordan), Hill W. Pence, Jude R. Howard; her great-grandchildren, Kyra L. Wall, and Kaelyn and Kase Burleson. She is also survived by bonus grandchildren, William M. Pence and family, and Matthew Pence; nephews, David, Keith and Jimmy Quick, and nieces, Christy F. Milton and Miriam F. Coggins; and sister-in-law, Kathleen B. Quick.

A visitation will be held on Saturday, May 31, 2025 from 10-11:45 a.m. at Hamlet First Presbyterian Church , with the funeral service following visitation beginning atnoon,  with the Rev. Michael Price officiating.  Burial will follow at Richmond County Memorial Park.
