OBITUARY: Charles Arthur Martin

Charles Arthur Martin, devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend, departed this life at the age of 83 on June 13, 2026, surrounded by his family.

Born in Hamlet, he was the son of the late Carl R. Martin and Mildred C. Martin. Arthur was born on Sept. 18, 1942.

Arthur began his career with then-Seaboard Airline Railroad at the age of 17. He saw changes from Seaboard Airline to Seaboard Coastline and CSX Transportation while working for 44 years. Arthur also served his country with the United States Army National Guard. He was a longtime volunteer with Hamlet Fire and Rescue.

Arthur loved playing cards and spending time with his family and friends. He was a devoted member to All Saints Episcopal Church in Hamlet.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 60 years, Ann Ardis Martin; and his brother, Carl “Bubba” Martin.

Left to cherish his memory are: his daughters, Cherie M. Deese (Tommy) of Rockingham and Chris M. Henson (Greg) of Hamlet; son, John L. Martin (Tracy) of Hamlet; grandchildren, Elizabeth Davenport (T.J.), Christin D. Adams (Tyler), Mckenzie Caulder (Matt), Amber Henson, Jake Martin (Kaitlin), Grey Martin (Haley) and Anna Glassen; great-grandchildren, Addison Davenport, Monroe Martin and, expecting in August, Brooks Lee Martin; brothers, Eddie Martin and John Martin; and a sister, Cherie Suggs. 

The family will receive friends at the home. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Hamlet Rescue, Hamlet; and All Saints Episcopal Church, Hamlet.

A memorial service celebrating the lives of Arthur and Ann will be conducted at All Saints Episcopal Church, Hamlet, beginning at 10 a.m. on Thursday, June 18 with a visitation followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m.
