On March 21, 2026, the world became a little quieter, but Heaven grew much brighter. Our hero, David Darrell Simmons — better known to everyone who loved him as “Boo”— was called to his eternal home.
Boo didn’t just talk about his faith; he lived it. To know him was to know a man who walked closely with the Lord. Throughout his journey on this Earth, Boo was a constant witness, sharing the light of his beliefs with everyone he met. His greatest mission in life wasn’t found in a career or a hobby, but in his heart’s deepest desire; to see all of his family and friends find their way to faith, so that one day, there would be a grand reunion in Heaven.
Beyond his devotion to the Lord, Boo was the ultimate family man. He was the best husband, daddy, and “BooPa” anyone could ever ask for. His life was defined by the joy he found in the simple, beautiful moments spent with those he loved — whether that was a trip to the beach, a Sunday morning at church when his health allowed, or a spirited afternoon cheering for his favorites.
If there was a race on the track or a ball in the air, you knew where to find him. Boo was a passionate fan of NASCAR, the Dallas Cowboys, the Richmond Raiders, and his beloved Carolina Tar Heels. Those who spent time with him will always remember that infectious energy he brought to the things he loved.
Boo was preceded in death by his parents, David Nathan Simmons and Betty Shephard Simmons.
He leaves behind a beautiful legacy of 46 years of marriage to his devoted wife, Brenda Goodwin Simmons. His memory will be cherished and kept alive by his daughters, Tara Simmons Hancock (J.P.) and Brooke Simmons Marsh (Jimmy). His pride and joy were his grandsons, Hunter Hancock (Hannah), Austin Campbell and Owen Hancock, who will carry their BooPa’s lessons with them forever. He is also survived by his brother, Wayne Simmons; a very special cousin, Jimmy Shephard (Beverly); sister-in-law, Susan Hayes (Alton); brother-in-law, Bruce Goodwin; along with many special extended family members.
While we miss him more than words can say, we take comfort in knowing he is exactly where he always wanted to be — in the presence of the Lord.
