Dell Dawkins, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend, passed away peacefully on March 16, 2025, at the age of 80. He was a man of many passions and deep faith, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, hard work and love.
Dell was born on Jan. 19, 1945 to Carl and Louise Dawkins, and he was the brother of Janice Dawkins Thomas, Herbert Dawkins and Kay Dawkins King.
He is survived by his loving wife, Lotta Dawkins, with whom he shared 57-plus years together. Dell is also survived by his children, Bill Dawkins (Stephanie) and Carl Dawkins (Angie); and his treasured grandchildren, Killian Dawkins, Kaitlyn Dawkins, Neeley Dawkins, Will Dawkins and Alyssa McCaskill. He is also survived by his sister, Janice Thomas (J.T.); his sisters-in-law, Annette Dawkins, Juanita Watson (Alan) and LaVina Crabtree (Danny); as well as numerous nieces and nephews and adopted family who loved him dearly.
Dell was a proud member of Mount Carmel Church in Rockingham, where his faith in the Lord was a central part of his life. He was known for his unshakable belief, his love of praising the Lord, and his warm heart.
Dell's joy and kindness were reflected in the way he interacted with everyone he met. He was quick to greet strangers with his signature warm "Good evening" in the mornings and "Good morning" in the evenings. Dell had a giving spirit, often passing out strawberry candy to anyone who wanted it, sharing a small but sweet gesture of love wherever he went.
Professionally, Dell spent many years working with heavy equipment, playing a pivotal role in the development and construction of Richmond and Scotland counties and their neighboring areas. He contributed to many important projects, including the development of Rankin Lake. Additionally, Dell was passionate about restoring old tractors, an activity that brought him great joy.
In his free time, Dell loved the outdoors. He had a deep affection for fishing and camping, moments that brought him peace and joy. He particularly enjoyed sitting under his tree in the front yard with his dear friend, James Heavner, and anyone else who would join them for a peaceful conversation.
Dell was also a former member of the Ellerbe Rescue Squad, where he served with the same selflessness that he exhibited throughout his life. He was always eager to lend a hand, offer support, and brighten the days of those around him.
Dell's passing leaves a deep void, but his memory will forever live on in the hearts of his family, friends, and all who were blessed to know him. A man of faith, kindness, and generosity, Dell was a true reflection of love and community. He will be missed more than words can express but will be remembered fondly for his unwavering spirit, his loving nature, and his enduring legacy.
The family will receive friends for visitation at Mount Carmel Church, Rockingham, Thursday, March 20, 5:30–6:45 p.m. with a memorial service to follow at 7 p.m. with pastors Mike Childers and Eddie Hildreth officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Mount Carmel Church, 573 Battley Dairy Road, Rockingham, NC 28379; or Ellerbe Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 148 Ellerbe, NC 28338.
