OBITUARY: Dexter Elwood Altman

Dexter Elwood Altman, 80, passed away May 16, 2026, surrounded by his loving family.

Born on Nov. 25, 1945, in Hemingway, South Carolina, he was the son of the late Lucille Poston Altman and Roland B. Altman. One of eight children, Dexter was deeply devoted to his family throughout his life.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Cynthia Goodman Altman, whom he married in 1966, sharing nearly 60 years of love and devotion together. He also leaves behind his children: Dexter Elwood “Woody” Altman (Donna), Roland McPhail “Mackie” Altman (Donna), Delinda Coan and Emily Harden (Clyde). Dexter is also survived by his siblings, Ava Altman Gentry, Otwell Wardie Altman (Frances), Judy Altman Hair, Linda Altman McIntyre (Scott), Jimmy Ray Altman (Georgia), and sister-in-law Celia Tyson Altman.

He was a proud grandfather to Trey Altman (Erin), Devin Altman (Erin), Sara Kathryn Altman (Betty), Rebecca Altman Smith (Josh), Maggie Altman, Blake Altman, Hannah Altman, Randy Altman, Angel Norton (James), Michelle Maddox (Tyler) and Zoie Harden. He was also blessed with great-grandchildren Maddie, Arlee Rose, Beckham, Anna Kate, Sophie, Otis, Oakland and Elliott, who brought him tremendous joy.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Roland L. Altman, and his sister, Demetra Altman Roberts.

A 1964 graduate of Hamlet High School, Dexter faithfully served his country in the National Guard before beginning a long career with CSX Transportation, from which he retired after many years of dedicated service.

Dexter will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend whose greatest joy was spending time with those he loved. He enjoyed collecting “big toys,” especially boats, and cherished time spent fishing and enjoying the beach. His adventurous spirit, love of family, generosity, and kindness will be deeply missed by those who loved him.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday, May 21, 2026, beginning at 11 a.m., at Second Baptist Church, Hamlet, with Pastor Chris Hawks officiating. The family will receive friends following the service.
