OBITUARY: Harris Roosevelt Odom

Posted

Harris Roosevelt Odom, 79, of Rockingham, passed away Sunday, Oct. 13, 2024 at Richmond County Hospice Haven, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born March 17, 1945, in Hamlet, son of the late Theodore Roosevelt “Babe” Odom and Geneva Brown Odom.

Mr. Odom loved to farm and was well-known in our community for growing the biggest, cleanest collards — affectionately known as “Collard Man.” Not only could he grow a bountiful garden, but he was also an excellent cook and baker, making homemade cakes from scratch which was one of his families’ favorites.

He was a hard worker and retired from the textile industry. In his earlier years, Mr. Odom loved to hunt rabbits and deer, and always enjoyed fishing with his son, Michael, even into his later years. One of his greatest enjoyments was feeding and watching the birds out of his kitchen window.

Mr. Odom was a pleasant, kind, and sweet man. Not only was he the best husband, but also a wonderful daddy, and he dearly loved all of his family.

Along with his parents, he is preceded in death by his siblings, Cartha, Alex, Celia, Wilbert, Faye and Myrtle.

Left to cherish Mr. Odom’s memories is his loving, devoted wife of almost 46 years, Patricia “Pat” Caulder Odom, of the home; daughters, Lorie Arnold (Mike Barta) of Jesup, Georgia, Darla Mabe (William), Kaye Moates (Wesley) and Jamie Odom, all of Rockingham; sons, Dennis McSwain (Melodie) and Michael Odom (Terri), both of Rockingham, and Jonathan Odom of Rochester, New York; adopted daughter, Dianna Newman of Rockingham; 19 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; brother, Ross Odom of Lenoir; and his emotional support furbaby, Chloe.

A Celebration of Life service will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2024 at 5 p.m. at Hopewell Independent Baptist Church, Hamlet, with Pastor Michael Carpenter and Pastor Joe Wilkes officiating. The family will receive friends following the service.

Harrington Funeral Home & Crematory is serving the Odom family.
