OBITUARY: Jackie Tanner

Posted

Jackie Tanner, “J.T.,” was a caring son, brother, uncle, friend and neighbor. He passed away at the age of 68 on Dec. 13 at his home in Rockingham.

Even though he left this world to be with his Savior and Lord; his loving heart leaves a beacon of light for us all. He is now reunited with his daddy, mama, and brother, Sammy.

From an early age, Jackie worked with his daddy and mama at Tanner’s Food Center. Later he became an entrepreneur and business owner of Glass Expressions and Tanner’s Tanning, where he worked closely with and employed many family members.

Jackie never met a stranger. He loved all people and loved to talk. He had a big heart for animals. He enjoyed being around them and felt a pull to help them when he could. He rescued many and you have probably seen him walking dogs in the neighborhood or around town.

He is preceded in death by his daddy, Samuel Durant Tanner; his mama, Sara Sanford Tanner; and his brother, Sammy Tanner.

He is survived by his sister, Christine Tanner Huguelet of Hamlet; his brother, Bobby Tanner (Kathy) of Jacksonville, Florida; sister, Nan Tanner Freeman (Creed) of Rockingham; and many nieces and nephews.

A funeral service is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 21, 2023 at First Assembly of God, 160 Clemmer Road, Rockingham.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Richmond County Humane Society.
