Jasper “Jack” Winfield Thomason, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and brother, passed away peacefully at his residence in Salado, Texas, on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, at the age of 85.

He was born on July7, 1940 in Tucson, Arizona, to Robert L. Thomason of Washington, North Carolina, and Mildred Hartgrove, later Mildred Nettles, of Hamlet, North Carolina.

Jack attended Camden Military Academy in Camden, South Carolina, and later studied at the University of North Carolina. A hard worker throughout his life, he carried a deep sense of discipline, dedication, and service into everything he did.

On June 3, 1978, Jack married the love of his life, Sandra E. Segura, retied major, ANC in San Antonio, Texas. Together they shared 48 wonderful years of marriage shaped by military service, family, and adventure, traveling the world through military assignments and later making their home in Salado, where they lived for 38 years.

Jack retired from the U.S. Army with the rank of captain after 23 years of service as both a non-commissioned and commissioned officer. He served as a combat medic in the Vietnam War and, after earning his Bachelor of Science in Nursing, was commissioned into the Army Nurse Corps. He was later recalled to duty in support of Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm and assigned to ARPERCEN in St. Louis, Missouri.

Over the course of his military service, he earned the Army Commendation Medal, Good Conduct Medal (3), National Defense Service Medal (2), Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with 2 Bronze Service Stars, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon (3), Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross Unit Citation with Palm, Republic of Vietnam Civil Actions Medal Unit Citation Badge 1st Class, and the Combat Medical Badge.

Following his military retirement, Jack continued his life of service as a Registered Nurse in a variety of settings, including prison nursing, the Texas Department of Health and Human Services, and Central Texas College. There, he served as department lab manager and adjunct faculty for the Associate Degree Nursing Program, the Vocational Nursing Program, and the EMT/Paramedic Program. Whether in uniform, in the classroom, or in patient care, Jack was committed to helping others and sharing what he knew.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Jack was known for his lively personality, love of history, and unforgettable storytelling. He was an active member of the Civil War Surgeons Society and the M.G. Car Club. Civil War reenacting was his passion, especially portraying a medical doctor.  He shared historical medical information by presenting them at schools, fairs, and various organization meetings. He also appeared as an extra in the film "True Women."

Jack was a gifted storyteller who never left out a single detail — and often added a few embellishments along the way, much to the delight of those around him. He loved a good buffet, especially Chinese food and crab.  He was always happiest when he could find a deal, whether at a flea market, garage sale, or retail outlets.

Jack was preceded in death by his father, Robert L. Thomason; his mother, Mildred Nettles; his sister, Pamela Dillman; and his son, Mark Timothy Thomason.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Sandra E. Thomason; his children, Elena Cruz Scioli and husband Brian, Robert L. Thomason, and Renee L. Rose of Columbus, Georgia; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; his brother, Vernon P. Nettles and wife Debbie of Hamlet, North Carolina; and numerous nieces and nephews. Jack leaves behind a legacy of service, loyalty, humor, and stories that will be told for years to come.

The family wishes to express their heartfelt appreciation to the staff and nurses of Altus Hospice for their compassionate care and support.
