Jerry Wayne Davis, 84, of Rockingham, passed away peacefully on Aug. 5, 2026 at Richmond County Hospice Haven. He was born on May 22, 1942 in Richmond County.

He graduated from Rockingham High School before joining the United States Navy, where he proudly served his country from 1960 to 1964, and then the Navy Reserves until 1966. Following his military service, he attended the University of North Carolina at Pembroke. He then dedicated over three decades as the food service director for Richmond County Schools, retiring in 2007. His commitment to his work and his community was evident in everything he did, as he truly loved his career and the people he served.

In 1962, he married the love of his life, Elaine Lunceford Davis, and together they built a life centered on love, family, and faith.

A faithful attendee of Joy Free Will Baptist Church and a former member of the Rockingham Civitan Club, he believed in serving others and staying connected to his community.

His passions extended far beyond his professional life. He was an avid golfer and fisherman and took great pride in caring for his yard. Above all else, he cherished his family, especially his two granddaughters, who were the light of his life and brought him boundless joy.

He was known for his quick wit, warm smile, and extraordinary ability to make everyone around him feel valued. He had a nickname for nearly everyone he met, and his gift for storytelling left a lasting impression on family, friends, and strangers alike. His kindness, generosity, and genuine love for others will be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Marvin "Mutt" and Colleen "Pete" Davis; and his brother, Marvin Keith "Kebo" Davis.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Elaine Davis; his son, Marty Davis and wife, Marsha; and his two cherished granddaughters, Natalie Elaine Davis and Claire Frances Davis.

A visitation will be held on Saturday, Aug. 8 2026, 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. at Joy Freewill Baptist Church, Hamlet, with a service to celebrate Jerry’s life to follow at 1 p.m.

Entombment with military honors will follow at Richmond Memorial Park.
