OBITUARY: Joann McKinnon Dixon

Posted

Joann McKinnon Dixon, 89, of Hamlet, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday, Dec. 23, 2023 at Richmond County Hospice Haven, surrounded by her loving family.

Born Betty Joann McKinnon on October 31, 1934 in Richmond County; she was the daughter of the late Jessie Martin McKinnon and Mattie Lee Hunt McKinnon.

Joann worked with Sara Lee Hosiery, formerly known as L’EGGS Hosiery, for numerous years at both the Sandhurst Plant and Safie Plant. She was an active member of the Church of God of Prophecy in Hamlet. She was well-known by her family and church family as a great cook and baker. Her love of cooking showed especially with her southern-style cooking and her banana pudding. Her love for her family and cooking also was evident because she, even into her later years, would cook dinner, inviting her nieces, nephews and other family. She also baked an award-winning Hershey cake that she was well-known for.

Joann was a sharp, classy lady and loved shopping, especially for clothes and shoes. Thrift-stores, Walmart and Hobby Lobby were some of her favorite places to patronize. Even though she was always well-dressed, she also loved doing yard work, gardening, raking, cutting grass, and flowers.

Joann, along with her loving husband, enjoyed many years at Garden City Beach where they owned a home for many years. They unselfishly would extend invitations to other family to stay at their place and spend time together. She will be dearly missed by her family and all that loved her.

Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister-in-law, Bette Davis McKinnon.

Joann is survived by her husband of 66 years, Gordon E. Dixon of the home; daughters, Sylvia Dixon and Annette Dixon, and husband J.J. Butler, all of Hamlet; brother, Billy H. McKinnon, and friend Pat Bankhead, of Rockingham; grandchildren, Steven Dixon, Michael Dixon, and wife Corey, Crystal Dawkins, and Kristan Dunn, and husband Patrick, all of Hamlet; great-grandchildren, Landon Dunn, Bella Peed and Kelsye Smith, and husband Bailey; and numerous nieces and nephews that she loved as her own.

Visitation will be held on Friday, Dec. 29, 2023 from noon-1 p.m. at The Church of God of Prophecy, Hamlet.

The funeral service will immediately follow the visitation, beginning at 1 p.m., with Bishop Steve Crews officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Memorials may be made to: Richmond County Hospice, 1119 N. U.S. Highway 1, Rockingham, NC 28379; or The Church of God of Prophecy Women’s Ministry, 615 Cheraw Road, Hamlet, NC 28345.
