John Douglas "Doug" Rice, of Hamlet, was born in Bennettsville, South Carolina, on April 6, 1962, to Daniel Webster Rice Jr. and Mae Pate Rice. He passed away on Monday, April 13, 2026, at his home at the age of 64.
Doug grew up in Hamlet, and graduated from Richmond Senior High School. He attended East Carolina University and returned home to Hamlet for a long career as draftsman at Cortek.
He is survived by his brother, Danny (wife, Johnnee) of Kinston, sister, Beth (spouse, Dewitt James) of Ellerbe, and brother, David, of Spring Hill, Florida, and loving niece and nephews.
Doug lived life to the fullest. He was known for his quick wit, always having a stream of puns, and never meeting a stranger. Doug loved his ECU Pirates and attending their football games.
He enjoyed the beach with family and playing golf while his health allowed. Doug was an unapologetic Duke Blue Devil basketball fanatic and treasured his visits to Cameron Indoor Stadium to see them play.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at a later date. Memorials should be directed to your favorite charity.
