OBITUARY: Joseph A. Lyerly

Evangelist Joseph A. Lyerly, 80, of Rockingham, went home to be with the Lord, Friday, March 14, 2025 at his home.

Joe was born in Rockingham on Oct. 23, 1944 to the Rev. Joe and Edith Lyerly who preceded him in death.

Joe was also preceded in death by his wife, Claudia Ann Thompson Lyerly; son, Joseph R. Lyerly; brothers, J.E. Lyerly, Bill Lyerly, the Rev. John D. Lyerly and Martin E. Lyerly; and sisters, Helen Faye Coble, Elizabeth Darby and Edith Nell Lyerly.

Surviving are his son, Mark Lyerly of Rockingham; stepdaughters, Leslye Cumber (Keith) of Hamlet and Christina Sanchez (Clint) of Rock Hill, South Carolina; brother, Harry Lee Lyerly of Florida; four grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; and one step-great-grandchild.

Mr. Lyerly was a former pastor and evangelist with the Pentecostal Holiness and Southern Baptist denominations.

He was a disabled Vietnam Veteran serving in the United States Army as a recon scout in 1965-1966. In Mr. Lyerly’s own words: “PTSD and Agent Orange caused me health and mental problems, but God’s grace never failed me.”

Visitation will be Tuesday, March 18, 2025 from 1-2 p.m. at Harrington Funeral Home, Hamlet. The funeral service will immediately follow visitation, beginning at 2 p.m., in the chapel of Harrington Funeral Home with the Rev. Keith Speed officiating.

Interment will follow with full military honors at Living Waters Pentecostal Holiness Church Cemetery, Loch Haven Road, Rockingham.
