OBITUARY: Joseph Danny Griffis

Posted

Joseph Danny Griffis, 75, of Rockingham, passed away at his home on Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2026.

He was born on May 29, 1950, to the late Joseph Delmas Griffis and Inez Legget Griffis.

Everyone who knew Danny described him as a quiet and humble man. He was a person of few words but when he spoke, he garnered everyone’s attention. He was unassuming and appreciated everything done for him or his family and his work ethic was unmatched. When he was 7 years old, he had a paper route to buy his own school clothes. That work ethic never left him as he dedicated 42 ½ years to CSX Transportation.

Danny loved God, his family, his country, the railroad, and Harley motorcycles! In his youth he enjoyed participating in all sports. He was an outstanding athlete in high school, playing football, basketball and baseball. He was the first high schooler to hit a baseball out of the old Atlanta-Fulton Stadium, before Turner Field.

A dear friend said of Danny, “ I do believe that the measure of a man on this earth is the family that he leaves behind. Danny took care to raise such a wonderfully powerful and sweet family, that no one can doubt his success.” Without a doubt, he adored “his girls” and grandchildren. If mom said “no,” they knew to go to “Gdiddy!” His passing leaves a void that will never be filled.

Along with his parents, Danny was preceded in death by his brothers, Jimmy Eugene Griffis and John Henry Griffis Jr; and sisters, Peggy Altman and Betty Tucker.

Left to cherish his memories, his wife of 52 years, Katherine Griffis of the home; daughters, Allison Griffis of Winston-Salem and Erin Griffis Gregory of Rockingham; and his beloved grandchildren, Jett and Gia.

A visitation will be held at First Baptist Church in Rockingham, on Saturday, Feb. 7, 2026, from 4-6 p.m.

Anyone wishing to honor Danny’s memory may consider contributing to: Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758517, Topeka, KS 66675.

Harrington Funeral Home is serving the Griffis family.
