OBITUARY: Joshia Clinton Lamm

Joshia Clinton “J.C.” Lamm, age 98, of Rockingham, North Carolina, passed peacefully on Oct. 25, 2025.

J.C. was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 49 years, Margaret Lamm; daughter Debbie Crouch; son Michael Lamm; grandson Josh Lamm; and son-in-law Larry Crouch.

He is survived by his son, Jeff Lamm (Leslie); grandchildren Kary Edmondson (Eric), Sam Crouch (Misty), Shelby Lamm, Forrest Lamm and Kelly Lamm; great-grandchildren Ethan and Ava Edmondson, Josh, Paisley and Gatelyn Lamm, Shyann and Calli Byrd, Owen and Weston Crouch, and Rowan Lamm; and his partner in later years, Hilda Butler.

A dedicated veteran, educator, public servant and beloved family man, J.C. leaves behind a legacy of service, leadership and devotion to both his community and his country.

Born and raised on a farm in Nash County, North Carolina, he was the youngest of 10 children. After graduating high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served with the Seabees in the Pacific during World War II. He later reenlisted during the Korean War, completing deployments across Europe, the Mediterranean and North Africa.

J.C. earned his bachelor’s degree from Appalachian State University and went on to receive two master’s degrees from East Carolina University. He began his career in education as a teacher and principal before moving into higher education.

In 1965, J.C. helped establish Richmond Technical Institute (now Richmond Community College). He was instrumental in the development of the college and helped guide its physical and academic growth during its formative years.

After retiring from state education in 1983, he continued his leadership career in a new direction, becoming a manager for Farm Bureau Insurance in Cumberland County. J.C. never strayed far from education. He served on the Richmond Community College Board of Trustees for 20 years and was a longtime member and chairman of the Richmond County Board of Education. He also served as a Richmond County commissioner.

His faith was an important part of his life, and he was a devoted member of First Baptist Church in Rockingham for many years. An avid golfer, J.C. enjoyed regular rounds with his group of friends affectionately known as the “Fearsome Foursome.” He also loved to travel and watch sports on TV.

J.C. Lamm was a man of integrity, humility and deep dedication. Whether in uniform, in the classroom, or in public service, he worked tirelessly to serve others. His impact on Richmond County will continue to be felt for generations to come.

He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and a friend to many. He will be deeply missed.  

The family will receive friends for visitation from 3 to 4 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 30, 2025 at First Baptist Church in Rockingham. A funeral service will be conducted at 4 pm with the Rev. CF McDowell and the Rev. Robbie Stewart officiating. The burial will be held privately.
