OBITUARY: Kathy C. Gainey

Posted

It is with great sadness that our beloved Kathy C. Gainey, 75, of Rockingham, North Carolina, passed away on Feb. 14, 2025, surrounded by her loving and adoring family.

Kathy was born on June 30, 1949, to William (Billy) Childers and Ina C. Childers.

Kathy was a pillar in her community and always strived to help anyone in need both personally and professionally.  She offered support in so many ways, by comforting those in need, offering a trustful ear, sharing the best advice or simply just being there to lean on.

During her career, Kathy wore many hats.  But she was most proud of her 38 years at the Clerk of Superior Court’s office.  Ultimately, running for Clerk of Superior Court in 2006, and winning that election and remaining the Clerk of Superior Court until her retirement in 2013, only retiring to be a caregiver to her precious mother, Ina.

Throughout her life and career, she established lifelong friendships. For 15 of her 38 years at the Clerk’s Office, Kathy helped many families cope with the loss of their loved ones, treating them as family even though she may not have known them before.  Her compassion, dedication and love were a beacon of hope for so many that were going through tough challenges in life.

She treasured her career and was the first one at the courthouse every morning, despite not being a morning person.  Kathy excelled in serving her community and was forever grateful to be elected as the Clerk of Superior Court.  She treated everyone with the same respect, always being fair and impartial.  She saw no one above her or below her, only their heart.

Kathy was a true testament of faith and devotion. She worked hard and expected others to as well.  She was tough, yet gentle with incredible talents from singing to sewing.  Kathy was blessed with many friends including her beloved Yaya sisters.

Being a very spiritual person, Kathy loved her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.  Her faith helped her conquer cancer twice in her life, not to mention sustain her throughout her time here on earth.

What fulfilled Kathy the most was being a mother to her only biological child. She was devoted and loving, working two and three jobs early on to provide for her daughter.  Kathy worked hard to make sure Shawn had everything she needed, while teaching her a strong work ethic, manners, values and morals.  She was so proud of Shawn and loved her with all her heart and in turn, Shawn loved her mother with undeniable admiration and respect.

Kathy also gained a wonderful son, Chuck Gainey, when she married the love of her life, Charles Gainey, in 1992.  She loved Chuck as her own and was so proud to have a son; a son that not only loved her but was so good to her.

Kathy, a doting grandmother to five grandchildren, Kimber, Garet, Carson, Caden and Aaron, always smiled when she spoke of them or spent time with them.  But her two great-granddaughters, Olivia and Wrenley, were the sparkle in her eyes, especially through her brief illness. She was so proud of her family and the family she and Charles blended.

Kathy married her soulmate, Charles Gainey, in 1992.  They were high-school sweethearts, and while their early life went in two different directions, their lifelong love ultimately reunited them years later.  She spent her final days loved by the best husband and family anyone could ask for.

Kathy was preceded in death by her father, William (Billy) Childers; her mother, Ina Chavis Childers; her brothers, William Childers Jr. (Junebug) and Mark Childers.

Kathy is survived by her husband, Charles Gainey; daughter, Shawn T. Weigman (Gary); son, Chuck Gainey (Kristin); grandchildren, Kimber Bryant (Nick), Garet Weigman (Jessi), Carson Gainey, Caden Gainey and Aaron Carter; great grandchildren, Olivia and Wrenley; sister, Elaine White (Joe); and many cousins, nieces and nephews that she loved.

The family would like to thank the caregivers from Carolina Hearts Home Care for their love, compassion and dedication while helping with their beloved Kathy.  As well as Richmond County Hospice.

The family will honor Mrs. Gainey’s wishes with no funeral service.

If you would like to honor Kathy, please do so by simply being a good friend, neighbor, caregiver, spending time with your family and spreading joy and love into this world. She would like nothing more than to be remembered for her compassion, dedication, strength and love for her family and her community.
