Malcolm Craig “Mac” Willingham of Surf Side Beach, South Carolina, formerly of Rockingham, age 77, passed away peacefully at home on Aug. 18, 2026, after a short battle with aggressive kidney cancer.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Johnny Jones Willingham; one son, Owen Craig Willingham of Rockingham; two granddaughters, Erin Willingham (Dwight) of Rockingham and Abby Willingham of Asheville; and three great-grandchildren, Emily Ann, Violet Rose and Owen.
Mac was born May 5, 1949 in Brunswick, Georgia to George Calvin and Vesta Mae Willingham. He is also preceded in death by a brother, George Owen Willingham.
After high school graduation, Mac earned degrees from King's Business College in Raleigh, then Louisburg College and North Carolina Wesleyan College. He then earned a Master of Divinity degree from Duke University Divinity School. While he was a student, Mac served churches in Louisburg, Graham and Sanford.
After graduation, he served in the Chaplaincy program at UNC-Chapel Hill and then was called as an associate pastor to First United Methodist Church of Rockingham. While in Rockingham, he accepted a call to be the director at Samaritan Colony, where he served for 20 years.
Mac and friends established Care Resources, a nonprofit organization, that included counseling services, Serenity Chapel and then later, Craig’s Corner in Surf Side Beach, South Carolina. Along with Lash Bragan, he formed TAPS (The Last Salute) ministry and presided over many funerals and remembrance services for veterans.
Mac was known for his infectious laugh and good humor, known to appear as “Elvis” from time to time, but more importantly he was a great prayer warrior. Mac spent hours writing hand-written letters and cards of encouragement to family, neighbors and the many friends he had accumulated over the years. His work in the community will be truly missed.
The family extends a special thanks to Agape Hospice Services and to his devoted daughter-in-law, Patricia, for providing great care and comfort.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: Care Resources, 1409 Hwy 17 Business S., Surf Side Beach, S.C. 29575.
