OBITUARY: Michael Wayne Grooms Jr.

Michael Wayne Grooms Jr., age 51, of Rockingham, passed away Sunday, Aug. 9, 2026, at FirstHealth Hospice House in Pinehurst.

Born on Sept. 15, 1974, in Scotland County, Michael was a beloved son of Norma McDonald and the late Michael Wayne Grooms Sr., brother, uncle and friend whose life was marked by kindness, devotion, and a genuine love for others. He was known as a loving man who cared deeply for his family and for people in general, and those who knew him will remember the warmth of his presence.

Michael is preceded in death by his father, Michael Wayne Grooms Sr.

He is survived by his mother, Norma McDonald, and stepfather, John McDonald of Rockingham. He is also survived by his siblings, Joy Graves (Lee Ray) of Rockingham, Dustin Grooms of Bennettsville, South Carolina, and Krista Jordan (Chris) of Rockingham. He was a proud uncle to Luke Preslar, Audrey Graves, Addie Moore, Anleigh Moore and Allie Moore. His family was an important part of his life, and he treasured the bonds he shared with them throughout the years.

Michael attended Roberdel Children’s Center during his school years. He later spent several years working at McLaurin Center, where he was appreciated for his dedication and steady presence.

Before his illness, Michael enjoyed basketball and found joy in listening to Christian music. He also loved watching wrestling and was a devoted Washington Redskins fan. These interests brought him happiness and gave him moments of enjoyment that he shared with those around him. Whether following a game, listening to music, or talking about wrestling, Michael found simple pleasures that reflected his personality and the things he loved most. His enthusiasm for these pastimes will be remembered fondly by family and friends.

In addition to his family and friends, Michael leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness and quiet strength. 

Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, Aug. 13, 2026 at McDonald Baptist Church with the Rev. Jimmy Branton, the Rev. Al Roller and the Rev. Sarah Grooms officiating. Burial will follow at the Grooms Cemetery. The family will receive friends from noon-1 p.m. prior to the service at the church  and other times at 190 Beane Run, Rockingham.
