OBITUARY: Richard Leroy Prevatte

Posted

Richard Leroy “Rick” Prevatte, 77, of Hamlet, passed away peacefully to be with his Lord and Savior, Monday, April 14, 2025, at his home with his wife of almost 53 years, Diane, by his side.

Rick was born Jan. 28, 1948 in Richmond County, son of the late Roy and Macie Prevatte.

He attended Highland Acres Church of God and Living Waters Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Rick worked for several years as a photographer with the Hamlet News, as a financial officer for Liberty Loans, and managed Keep Safe Storage and Rick’s Auto Sales, from where he retired.

He was known as a jokester who always loved to make people laugh. Rick had a special love for woodworking, turning that God-given talent and hobby into a business, Wood-n-Things. He created many beautiful pieces throughout the years. Another hobby that he enjoyed was collecting old cars such as King Midgets and “The Thing.”

A special love of his was spending time in the N.C. mountains, and at every chance he got, he would head up to his place in Blowing Rock with Diane, children, grandchildren, and special friends. This was especially true if there was any possibility of snow, which he loved. He always insisted on taking the “scenic route” while traveling; unpaved roads with lots of twists and turns and roadside streams were his choice of routes.

When home, Rick loved watching old cowboy movies, preferably black and white movies from his childhood.
Rick’s greatest love, however, was his family. His wife, Diane, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren brought him so much pride and joy, and he will be greatly missed by them as a wonderful husband, Daddy, and PaPa.

In addition to his parents, Rick was preceded in death by his sisters, Brenda Dennis and Dolores Adame.

He is survived by his wife, Diane, of the home; children, Vicky Prevatte and Billy John Prevatte; grandchildren, Richard Martin, Rebekah Martin, William Bauguess, Gavin Payne, Tiffany Prevatte and Kara Prevatte; great-grandchildren, Skylar Fleenor, Michael Prevatte-Fleenor, Carson Prevatte and Layla Prevatte. He is also survived by his sister, Candace Everett (Jerry); several special nieces and nephews; and many dear friends.

Visitation will be Thursday, April 17, 2025 from 11 a.m. -noon at Abundant Life Church with the funeral service immediately following at noon with Pastor Joe Wilkes, the Rev. Billy Dennis, and Gary Payne officiating. Entombment will be held private.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to your choice of the following: Franklin Graham’s Samaritan Purse, online at samaritanspurse.org; or International Pentecostal Holiness Church, Missions Dept., P.O. Box 12609, Oklahoma City, OK 73157.

Harrington Funeral Home & Crematory is honored to serve the family. Online condolences may be made at harringtonfuneralhome.com.
