OBITUARY: Sally Pierce

Sally Pierce, 92, of Rockingham, passed away peacefully on Aug. 5, surrounded by the love of her family.

To those who knew her best, she was simply Mom or Mema. Whether you knew her as Sally or Mema, you knew a woman whose life was defined by unwavering faith, contagious joy, and an extraordinary capacity to love others unconditionally. She never met a stranger and never missed an opportunity to tell a funny story, lend a helping hand, or remind the people she loved just how much they meant to her.

Raised primarily by her mother, Alice Dickens, who courageously operated a boarding house to support the family, Sally grew up surrounded by colorful characters and unforgettable experiences. Sally loved sharing stories from growing up in a bustling boarding house and the many other adventures she enjoyed throughout her life. Whether recounting a childhood memory or a more recent escapade, Mema had a gift for bringing every story to life with her warmth, humor, and unmistakable sparkle.

Faith was the foundation of Sally's life. She said her prayers on her knees every night until very recently when she was no longer physically able.

A devoted member of First Baptist Church of Rockingham for 62 years, she faithfully served her church family in countless ways. She taught Sunday school, served on the Finance Committee, prepared countless meals, volunteered in the soup kitchen, and quietly stepped into whatever role was needed. Her service was never about recognition; it was simply an expression of the faith she lived every day and the love she had for her church family.

Her greatest joy was her family. Sally was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who had an incredible way of making each generation feel like the center of her world. Family gatherings were her happiest moments.

She had an infectious joy and often said, "I just love to laugh." No one made her laugh harder than her beloved sister and best friend, Jo Alice. Together they shared countless inside jokes, teased their family endlessly, and laughed until everyone around them couldn't help but laugh too.

Sally embraced life with enthusiasm. She was an accomplished swimmer, a master gardener, a talented seamstress, and a wildly competitive card player. Sally’s homemade peach preserves and cheese straws were famous and everyone’s favorite Christmas gift. She never met a dessert she didn't love and often joked that dessert was her favorite food. As a little girl, her dream job was to work behind the candy counter at the local dime store — a sweet tooth she happily carried with her throughout her 92 years.

She saw the good in people and made sure they knew it. She never missed an opportunity to tell her children how proud she was of them, to brag on her family, or to celebrate the accomplishments of those she loved. Although she gave love so freely, she never expected it in return. Every expression of love she received seemed to surprise and delight her, and she accepted it with genuine gratitude. She never took love for granted.

Her compassion extended well beyond her own family. Whether serving a meal at church, welcoming someone into her home, or offering a ride to a stranger, Sally had a way of making people feel like they mattered. Loving others wasn't something she tried to do — it was simply who she was.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Luther Pierce; her parents, Alice and Joseph Dickens; her sister, Jo Alice Edwards; her brother, Alan Dickens; and her grandson, Alex Sherrill.

She is survived by her daughters, Jackie Sherrill (David) and Joanna Sherron (Randy); her son, Mart Pierce (Tara); her grandchildren, Ashley Cagle (Andy), Katie Harris and Caroline Hains (Ben); her cherished great-grandchildren, Emma, Hall and Eli Cagle; and many beloved extended family members, church family, and dear friends.

Her love was her greatest gift, and her legacy will live on in every life she touched.
