OBITUARY: Shelby Jean Ghant Sherrill

Shelby Jean Ghant Sherrill, a beloved mother, grandmother and friend, peacefully passed away, at the age of 88, at her home in Hamlet, surrounded by her loving family.

Born on June 24, 1937 in Rockingham, Shelby was the cherished daughter of the late Earl Spencer Ghant and Fannie Lee Robinson Ghant.

Shelby was a beacon of grace and warmth in the lives of all who knew her. She spent her career in the banking industry, working at United Carolina Bank and BB&T, where she gracefully rose to the position of loan officer before her retirement. Her dedication to her work was matched only by her devotion to her family, whom she dearly loved and cherished.

A woman of gentle strength and enduring kindness, Shelby found great joy in preparing Sunday meals for her family. Her home was a haven of warmth and love, where the aromas of her homemade desserts would fill the air, creating cherished memories that will be treasured by her family forever. Her only grandchild, Erin, fondly remembers spending Friday nights with her “Meme,” excited to wake on Saturday mornings with homemade baked cookies for breakfast. Meme worked hard to get all her chores completed so that when Erin came over they could do whatever Erin wanted. She was a doting Meme that loved Erin dearly.

Throughout her life, Shelby loved traveling and especially to the beach where she loved to bask in the sun. These trips were always welcomed by her family in which they would share memories of these times together.

Shelby was known for her serene demeanor; her ever-present smile could light up any room, and her calm presence was comforting to those around her. Never one to get upset, she handled life's challenges with a quiet strength and unwavering grace.

In addition to her parents, Shelby was predeceased by her beloved husband, Franklin Travis Sherrill; her brother, Donald Clyde Ghant; and her sister, Betty Lou Roberts.

Her legacy of love and kindness lives on through her son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Doris Sherrill of Hamlet, and her treasured granddaughter, Erin Sherrill Starling (Wesley Haltom) of Rockingham, who will forever hold her memory close to their hearts.

A service to celebrate Shelby's life will be held at Harrington Funeral Home in Hamlet at 6 p.m. on Monday, April 20, 2026, where family and friends will gather to honor the life of a remarkable woman who touched so many. The family will receive friends prior to the service between 5-6 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to Richmond County Hospice, 1119 N. U.S. Highway 1, Rockingham, NC 28379, in Shelby's memory.

Harrington Funeral Home & Crematory is serving the family.
