It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Tony Albert Smith, who departed this world on July 12, 2026, at the age of 68.
Born May 4, 1958 in Rockingham, North Carolina, Tony was a beloved son, brother, fiancé, uncle and friend who touched the lives of many around him with his warmth and laughter.
Tony was cherished son of Floyd (Al) Smith Jr. and Doris Allen Smith, who reside in Hillard, Florida. Tony is survived by his beloved fiancé, Karen Sharpe Tauscher, who was his partner in both life and love.
Tony was the beloved brother of Jerry Smith (Debbie). He was also a cherished sibling to his sister whom they shared a special bond of love, respect and continued cherish memories, Teresa Smith Kidd. His nieces, Sonya, Connor and Ali Morgan, held a special place in his heart, and he adored his great nieces, Maggie and Amelia. His extended family beyond immediate relations to include his aunts, Jennifer Allen Hurlocker (Howard) and Betty Smith Melton and many special cousins who were an integral part of his life.
Tony educational journey began at Wolfson and Windsor Forest High School, where he laid the foundation for a successful career. He later attended the SCL/CSX Electrician Apprentice School, which marked the beginning of his professional journey. Tony worked diligently as an electrician for SCL/CSX Railroad in Hamlet, where he was respected for his expertise and commitment to his craft.
A man of varied interests, Tony was an active member of the Georgia Bulldogs Fan Club and the Shag Club in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. His enthusiasm for the Georgia Bulldogs was infectious, and he took great pride in supporting his team. Tony was also known for his love of gardening, a hobby in which he excelled, nurturing plants with the same care and attention he gave to his relationships.
Tony’s personal qualities were vibrant, as his spirit. He was renowned for his quick humor and charm, effortlessly bringing joy and laughter to all around him. His dancing skills made him a favorite at any gathering, and his culinary talents ensured that friends and family were always treated to delicious meals. Above all, Tony was a devoted uncle and friend, whose love of laughter and life was evident in everything he did.
As we remember Tony, we celebrate a life well-lived and his indelible mark he left on those fortunate enough to have known him. His memory will forever be a source of comfort and inspiration to his family and friends.

Tony's light may have dimmed, but its warmth and brilliance continue to shine brightly in the hearts of all who knew him.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, July 22, 2026 at noon at Watson-King Funeral Home Chapel in Rockingham with Adam Tatum officiating. Burial will follow at Richmond Co. Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m.-noon prior to the service at the funeral home.
