FAYETTEVILLE — Still looking to break into the win column against a conference opponent, the Richmond Senior High School girls’ soccer team came up a goal short Friday.
Ending a 15-day break between matches, the Lady Raiders resumed Mid-South Conference play at Pine Forest High School.
Facing the Lady Trojans for the second time this season, Richmond couldn’t even the series and lost 1-0.
The match was 0-0 at half time. The Lady Trojans scored the only goal of the night in the final 40 minutes on a free kick.
Finding the shot over a wall of defenders, junior goalkeeper Kenley Smith made the initial stop but couldn’t keep the rebound opportunity out of the back of the net.
Head coach Chris Larsen said the Lady Raiders had “nine or 10 shots on goal” and a “couple of good scoring chances” in the first half, but the team didn’t get the lucky bounce into the goal.
The Lady Raiders (3-9-2, 0-5-1 MSC) will hold their annual senior night Monday at home against non-conference Forest Hills High School (1-11-2). The match will start at 7 p.m.
JV girls’ soccer team wins on road
Ahead of Friday’s varsity match, the Richmond junior varsity soccer team defeated Pine Forest 3-1.
Leading 2-0 at the half, Richmond added an insurance goal in the second half.
Freshman Kallie Hamby scored the first goal for the JV Lady Raiders on a 20-yard free kick, and fellow freshman Anajiah Pore scored before the intermission to make it a two-goal lead.
Sophomore Fallon Covey recorded Richmond’s third goal of the night, finding the net in the second half. Pine Forest’s goal was scored via a penalty kick in the closing minutes.
The JV Lady Raiders (6-4, 4-2 MSC) will also host Forest Hills Monday. Action will get underway at 5:15 p.m.
