ELLERBE — A man on parole wanted on assault charges reportedly had weed on him when he was taken to jail.
According to the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office, a deputy responded to a call of a suspicious vehicle in the area of Anita Lane on May 9.
The responding deputy spoke to a man standing outside the vehicle, later identified as 22-year-old Juan Carlos Dejesus Jimenez, of Ellerbe.
Jimenez reportedly had outstanding warrants for assault on a female and simple assault, and was taken into custody.
While being processed at the Richmond County Jail, the detention officer reportedly found an unspecified quantity of marijuana on Jimenez’s person.
Jimenez was charged with a felony count of possession of a controlled substance on prison or jail premises. He was reportedly held on an $11,000 secured bond, but online records appear to show he has since been released on bail.
Online court records show Jimenez is scheduled to appear in court May 20 on the assault charges and May 23 on the drug charge.
Records with the N.C. Department of Adult Correction show Jimenez was convicted in 2022 of assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury in Union County, and given probation.
His probation was revoked in February the following year when he was convicted of possession of a firearm by a felon and fleeing to elude arrest in Richmond County.
Jimenez served nearly a year in prison and was released Jan. 18. His parole is scheduled to end Jan. 17, 2025 on the assault conviction, and Oct. 14 this year on the other conviction.
All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
