ROCKINGHAM — A week full of summer development camps at Richmond Senior High School started Wednesday morning with the tennis program.

Held for the second summer by head coach Jessica Covington, around 30 boys and girls participated in the first day of camp.

Leading instruction to campers was Tom Sweitzer, a United States Professional Tennis Association pro based in Moore County.

Along with the help of Richmond tennis players Gavin Applewhite and Ben Lutz, campers worked through a series of drills focused on footwork, forehand and backhand hitting and ball control.

“It was a great first day of camp,” Covington shared. “We’re so grateful to have Tom join us again this year to help our campers learn the game the right way.

“Our numbers are so good. There are a lot of returners and some new faces,” she added. “Our goal is to help grow the sport in our community and get more kids involved. We are excited to see what the rest of the week brings.”

Richmond’s tennis camp will continue Thursday and Friday with daily sessions running from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

The Richmond Observer will publish photo galleries of Richmond’s baseball and softball camps later this week.
