HAMLET — Opening its season Tuesday, the Hamlet American Legion Post 49 junior baseball team earned a victory.
The Junior 49ers defeated Liberty Post 81 by a final score of 8-2.
Noah Trexler earned the win with a five-inning outing. He allowed one unearned run and had five strikeouts. Colton Trexler pitched two innings of relief and gave up an earned run with two Ks.
Hamlet jumped ahead 5-0 with a five-run third inning and scored two insurance runs in the fifth. Post 49’s final run scored came in the sixth frame.
Jake Smith had two hits, including a double, and led the team with two runs batted in. Cooper Perkins also finished with a pair of hits.

Hamlet (1-0, 1-0 Area 3) will travel to North Moore High School Friday to face Moore County Post 12. First pitch is at 7 p.m.
