Richmond loses 36-35 in OT

SOUTHERN PINES — Leading by 21 points midway through the third quarter Thursday, the Richmond Senior High School junior varsity football team wasn’t able to hold on for the win.

 

Playing at Pinecrest High School for the Mid-South Conference championship, the JV Raiders suffered a 36-35 loss in overtime to end their season.

 

Three rushing scores in the first half — one apiece from Donovan Jones, Damarion Allen and TJ Watkins — were added to when Jones rushed for his second touchdown of the game to make it 28-7 with more than seven minutes remaining in third.

 

Pinecrest scored three rushing touchdowns of its own late in the third and early in the fourth to send the game to overtime tied at 28 points.

 

Allen threw a passing touchdown to Dereon Wiley in overtime, and Nate Erwin’s PAT made it 35-28.

 

Pinecrest answered with a rushing score and completed a successful two-point conversion rushing play to secure the championship win.

The JV Raiders went 7-2 overall this season and had a 4-1 record against conference opponents.
