ROCKINGHAM — Taking to the hardwood for the first time this season, the Richmond Senior High School boys’ basketball program held its first day of tryouts Wednesday.
After weeks of pre-season workouts, the Raiders got the green light to begin the new campaign on the NCHSAA’s first official day of the winter sports season.
More than 30 players attended the tryout session, which was led by head coach Donald Pettigrew. Wednesday marked the start of his eighth season as the head of the program.
Many of Richmond’s varsity and junior varsity players from last season not at the tryout because they are still playing football.
Richmond, which returned to the NCHSAA 4A East regional championship last season for the second winter in a row, will be without former standouts Paul McNeil Jr., Javian Drake and Jamarion Wall, all of whom graduated.
The Raiders will hold two more days of tryouts Thursday and Friday. That will be followed by a varsity scrimmage Saturday at Southern Lee High School.
