ROCKINGHAM — A busy afternoon at Richmond Senior High School started with the boys’ tennis team’s senior night.
One of three home sporting events Thursday, the Raiders were the first program to honor its senior players.
This year’s senior class included Gavin Applewhite, Jordan Jacobs, Matthew Leggett, Jordan McCormick and Billy West. All of those seniors were multi-year starters for the Raiders except for McCormick, who joined the team this season.
“This group has been really great,” head coach Jessica Covington said. “It’s been a lot of fun watching the guys progress and get better, especially Jordan, Matt and Gavin, who have been with us for several years.
“I’m glad that Billy came back after a year away and that Jordan decided to play his senior season,” she added. “Each one of them added tremendous value to our program. We will miss their leadership next season, but we still have some business we want to take care of this year.”
Prior to their doubleheader with Scotland High School, Covington and the other Raider players took time to celebrate the contributions of the five seniors.
Covington spoke of each player’s journey and shared stories and laughs of the past four years. Players were also presented with gift baskets.
The Richmond Observer will publish the results of Richmond’s tennis match against Scotland High School soon.
