ROCKINGHAM — The first senior night of the winter sports season at Richmond Senior High School recognized the wrestling program Wednesday.
Ahead of their Mid-South Conference tri-meet with Hoke County and Overhills high schools, the Raiders took time to celebrate their seven seniors.
This year’s senior wrestlers were Esaias Brunson, Jason Gainey, Jordan Hamilton and Brooklyn Windley. The team also had three senior managers — Jaquial Baldwin, Imani Ellerbe and Zymorion Little.
Each wrestler was introduced by head coach Andre’ Ellerbe, with many of the seniors also being escorted by family members. Senior wrestlers received wooden plaques, while the managers got wooden necklaces.
“I can’t say anything but nice things about all of our seniors,” Ellerbe said. “They’ve been nothing but amazing. Jordan and Jason have wrestled for us all four years and have been cornerstones for our team. They’ve been guys we’ve been able to count on in tough matches.
“Esaias and Brooklyn have also been multiyear wrestlers. Brooklyn started wrestling boys and now she’s the best girls’ captain, and Esaias has been a consistent wrestler who has really been our go-to guy in the heavyweight this year.
“Our managers take a lot of weight off my shoulders,” he added. “They keep the scorebook, they run the clocks. I’m so appreciative of all of our seniors and we’ll miss them next year.”
The Richmond Observer will publish the results of Wednesday’s matches soon.
