WINSTON-SALEM — A play-in game for the Hamlet Junior American Legion baseball team was suspended due to weather Sunday.
Hamlet Post 49 traveled to Atkins High School to face Kernersville Post 36 for a one game, winner-take-all opportunity to make the Area 3 Conference playoffs.
Head coach Anthony Hailey explained the team was notified over the holiday weekend that it would have a chance to earn the No. 8 seed in the conference postseason bracket.
Sunday’s meeting was suspended after several weather delays in between the top and the bottom of the second inning.
At the time of the suspension, Hamlet led 3-0. The Junior 49ers scored all three of their runs in the top of the first inning.
Emery Owens doubled home Jake Smith (leadoff walk) to give Hamlet a 1-0 lead with one out.
Later, with two gone, Jaxton Watson singled to left field to plate Owens. Moving to second on the throw to the plate, Watson was able to score when a throwing error sailed into the outfield to make it 3-0.
Noah Trexler started on the mound for Post 49 and retired Post 36 in order in the lone inning he pitched.
Hailey said “we are trying to decide if we can finish the game tomorrow (Monday) and have (Kernersville) come to Hamlet” and play at Memorial Park.
If the game isn’t finished Monday, Hailey said it would likely result in Kernersville advancing to the best-of-three-game opening round of the playoffs. He cited Post 36 having a “better runs allowed average” than Hamlet this season.
The Richmond Observer will update this article with any new information regarding Monday’s potential completion of the game when it’s announced.
