ROCKINGHAM — A local motorcycle club hit the highways early Saturday afternoon to raise money for a scholarship fund in honor of two teens who were slain several years ago.
Members of Playaz Elite and several other riders met in the parking lot of Broad Street Square, in front of Sly’s Famous Diner, for the inaugural “Riding Into the Future.”
The ride and scholarship are in memory of De’Marion Latrell “Duna” Davis, of Hamlet, and Malik Keysean Ellerbe, of Rockingham, both 17, who were killed at the 74 Car Wash on East Broad Avenue — across the street — on Nov. 28, 2021.
“We do a scholarship every year to give back to the community to help other kids be able to go to school,” said Tanikka Hough, Davis’ mother. “We thought this would be a great idea…to bring the community together, to raise money.”
This was the first year for the ride, but Hough said they have been raising money for the scholarship fund for four years and each scholarship is generally $1,000.
Motorcycle rides in Richmond County have brought in tens of thousands of dollars over the past several years for various causes, including the Special Olympics, Project Taylor and Pence Place.
