Playoff picture remains murky as SEMSAC volleyball heads into final 2 matches

Posted

The Southeastern Middle School Athletic Conference volleyball playoff picture remains unsettled with just two regular-season matches left, and conference officials may need as many as two separate drawings to finalize the six-team postseason bracket.

Monday's action kept the race for first place tight while also creating the potential for a three-team battle for the final playoff spots.

Carver strengthened its position with a 3-0 victory over Spring Hill, Sandy Grove swept Cordova 3-0, and West Hoke defeated East Hoke 3-1.

Those results leave Carver and Sandy Grove tied atop the standings at 7-1, while Rockingham sits just behind at 6-1 with one match remaining.

The conference's most significant matchup of the week will take place Wednesday when Rockingham travels to Hamlet.

If Rockingham wins, the Lady Rockets would finish the season 7-1, creating a three-way tie with Carver and Sandy Grove for first place. Under that scenario, a drawing would be required to determine the conference tournament's top three seeds.

The outcome would determine which team earns the No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 positions entering postseason play.

A Hamlet victory would eliminate that possibility and bring immediate clarity to the top of the standings. Carver would claim the regular-season championship and No. 1 seed outright, followed by Sandy Grove as the No. 2 seed and Rockingham as the No. 3 seed.

The race for the final playoff berths is equally intriguing.

Currently, Hamlet owns fifth place at 3-4, while West Hoke is sixth at 3-5. Ellerbe remains in contention at 2-5 with one match remaining against Cordova on Thursday.

Should Rockingham defeat Hamlet on Wednesday and Ellerbe follow with a victory over Cordova on Thursday, Hamlet, West Hoke and Ellerbe would all finish with identical records. That scenario would force a second drawing to determine the final two playoff qualifiers.
One team would be awarded the No. 5 seed, another the No. 6 seed, and the third team would be left out of the playoffs.

If Hamlet pulls off the upset against Rockingham, no drawing would be needed for the final playoff positions. Hamlet would secure the No. 5 seed outright and West Hoke would lock up the No. 6 seed, ending Ellerbe's postseason hopes.

The only team not tied up in the postseason positioning drama is Spring Hill. The Lady Spartans have locked up the No. 4 seed regardless of what happens in the remaining matches.
