Police charge Alabama woman with stealing car in Rockingham

ROCKINGHAM — An Alabama woman who reportedly caused a wreck in another county over the summer is facing six charges in Richmond County after allegedly stealing a car.

According to a magistrate’s order, 40-year-old Tammy Ann Savage, of Montgomery, Alabama, stole a 2009 Chevrolet Malibu in the city of Rockingham on Dec. 10, along with a black jacket.

She was arrested by an officer with the Rockingham Police Department and charged with: larceny of a motor vehicle; possession of a stolen motor vehicle; breaking and entering a motor vehicle; misdemeanor larceny; possession of stolen goods or property; and having no operator’s license.

Savage was booked into the Richmond County Jail where she is being held on a $25,000 secured bond. She had her first appearance and her next court date is scheduled for Dec. 18.

An article in the Johnston County Report notes that Savage was cited in July for driving east in the westbound lanes of Interstate 40 near Benson.

Savage reportedly sideswiped a pickup truck, lost control and hit another car head-on, causing critical injuries to the other driver.

While the news report names her as “Tammy Ann Savage,” the citation — for reckless driving to endanger, driving the wrong way on a dual-lane highway, and having no operator’s license — lists her as “Tammy Lynn Savage.” However, the address and birth date are the same as the Richmond County magistrate’s order.

Records show she failed to appear in Johnston County court on Aug. 22 and Dec. 3.

All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
