ROCKINGHAM — A Hamlet man convicted earlier this month is accused of assaulting a woman, damaging her car and stealing her jewelry.

A warrant taken out by the reported victim alleges that 45-year-old Carlos Maurice Pemberton hit her in the face, choked her and threw her through the window of a side door.

Pemberton is also accused of causing more than $200 in damage to the reported victim’s 2007 Mitsubishi Endeavor and stealing her 16-inch 10-karat-gold necklace.

The incident reportedly occurred on June 16 and the warrant was sworn out the next day.

Pemberton was arrested June 19 and charged with one misdemeanor count each of assault and battery, larceny and injury to personal property.

He is currently being held without bond in the Richmond County Jail, with a hearing scheduled for 3:13 p.m. on June 21, according to the release order. His court appearance is scheduled for July 10.

Online court records show Pemberton has two pending cases from 2025 that include charges of simple possession of a Schedule VI controlled substance and reckless driving, along with other traffic violations.

Records with the N.C. Department of Adult Correction show Pemberton was convicted June 4 on charges of speeding to elude arrest, possession of a Schedule II controlled substance and assault on an officer or state employee. He was given an 18-month suspended sentence.

Court records show other charges were dropped as part of a plea agreement.

Pemberton was previously convicted of possession of a Schedule II controlled substance in both 2002 and 2004. His probation on the first conviction was revoked following the second conviction and he was incarcerated for nearly five months.

Pemberton was convicted of possession of drug paraphernalia in 2008 and again in 2011. The latter conviction also included a charge of resisting an officer.

All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
