ROCKINGHAM — A Wadesboro man accused of running from and shooting at law enforcement has been taken into custody.
According to the Rockingham Police Department, officers attempted to stop a blue Chevrolet Venture van around 11:32 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 7 on Mill Road after receiving a Flock Safety alert regarding a wanted person — 45-year-old Scotty Roy Hills.
Court records show an order for his arrest was issued Sept. 2 for reportedly failing to appear in court Aug. 25 on a charge of possession of a stolen motor vehicle.
Hills allegedly refused to stop and led officers on a chase through Rockingham and into Anson County.
During the chase, Hills allegedly failed stop at the stop sign at Mill Road and Hancock Street and two stop lights, and drove west in the eastbound lane of U.S. 74 Business
The Anson County Sheriff’s Office reportedly used stop sticks to disable the van on U.S. 74 near Harrington Road, between Lilesville and Wadesboro.
At some point, according to a warrant, Hills struck a RPD officer with his vehicle.
Police say Hills ran into a wooded area and fired several shots at officers who were in pursuit.
The manhunt continued Monday, involving the Rockingham and Polkton police departments, sheriff’s offices of Anson and Richmond counties, and the N.C. State Highway Patrol Aviation Unit.
Hills was found and arrested on Tuesday, Sept. 9. He allegedly had eight bags of fentanyl in his possession.
He is charged in Richmond County with: fleeing to elude arrest with a motor vehicle; assault with a deadly weapon on a government official; three counts of assault on a law enforcement officer with a firearm; possession of a firearm by a felon; and resisting a public officer.
Police also charged him with several driving infractions: driving the wrong way on a dual lane highway; failure to yield at a stop sign or flashing red light; and two counts of failure to stop at a steady red light.
Hills is charged in Anson County with possession of a Schedule I controlled substance and possession with intent to manufacture, sell or deliver a Schedule I controlled substance.
Hills is being held without bond and has court dates scheduled for Sept. 25 in Richmond County and Sept. 22 and 29 in Anson County.
Hills appears to have no prior criminal convictions in North Carolina.
All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
