Raider baseball alumni game planned for Saturday

2000 state runner-up team to be recognized

ROCKINGHAM — Keen on remembering the players and coaches who have helped build the program the last five decades, the Richmond Senior High School baseball team will host its alumni game Saturday.

In what will be the second alumni day in two seasons since Eric Brown became the head coach of the Raiders, a special recognition will be given before the game.

A quarter-century after its run to the 4A state championship and finish as runner-up, the 2000 Raider baseball team will be honored.

Coached by Ronnie Yarbrough, the 2000 Raiders faced Apex High School in the state championship series. Current assistant coach Kevin Wallace was a member of that team.

During last season’s alumni game, players and coaches of the 1974 state championship-winning team were welcomed onto the field.

While the 25th anniversary of the 2000 team will be celebrated, all Raider baseball alumni are invited to attend.

Former players and coaches who fill out an alumni contact form ahead of time will receive free entry to the game, as well as have access to free food and drinks at a tailgate.

Brown added that all alumni are invited to join the team on the field during the playing of the National Anthem.

“This program was built on the legacy of all the players and coaches before us,” Brown said. “I’ve been big on that tradition since I started here, and alumni day is a chance for us to recognize as many former players and coaches as possible.

“It’s also a chance for us to network and strengthen the foundation of the program,” he continued. “I want to keep the Raider baseball community, current and former, informed of everything we’re doing. It’s a special day and I hope to have as many alumni join us who can.”

The Raiders (8-6, 5-3 Sandhills Athletic Conference) will play three games this week, starting with a two-game conference series with Lee County High School Tuesday (away) and Friday (home).

Saturday’s alumni game will be a non-conference matchup against Caldwell Academy (6-7). First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. against the Eagles.
