Raider golf takes 2nd again at Anderson Creek

Turner shoots even par, Odom and Cosey +5

SPRING LAKE — It was another strong outing for the Richmond Senior High School boys’ golf team Monday.

The Raiders made their way to Anderson Creek Golf Club for their second Mid-South Conference match of the regular season.

Similar to its first outing last Tuesday, Richmond relied on its veteran golfers to shoot a team season-low score.

Playing the front nine holes at Anderson Creek, the Raiders posted a final score of 166 from its top four golfers. That tally was one stroke better than last week.

“Today was windy,” head coach Chris Turner said afterward. “That made the course play tough. We had some great scores today despite some of the conditions.

“I think the guys are trying too hard,” he added. “And that’s causing them to not play as relaxed and play their best golf. We’ll continue to work on playing under pressure and being able to finish our round strong as a team.”

The Raiders chased Pinecrest High School on the scorecard and finished 17 shots behind the Patriots, who won the match with a team score of 149.

Finishing third behind the Raiders was Jack Britt High School (184), followed by Overhills High School (191). Hoke County and Pine Forest high schools also competed but didn’t have enough golfers to qualify for the team standings.

A career day from junior CJ Turner paced the Raiders to their second consecutive second-place finish. He shot an even par 36 (E), a single-round career-low, which put him second overall in the field.

Posting matching scores of 41 (+5) were senior Kevin Cosey and junior Graham Odom. That score was a season-low for both players.

Senior Tyler McKenzie rounded out the qualifying golfers with a 46 (+10), which was a stroke more than his first outing of the season.

Richmond had two other golfers in contention for the top four spots — junior Grayson Robson and sophomore Drake Wallace — both of whom finished with a 48 on the scorecard.

The Raiders, who are in second place in the MSC standings, have one more nine-hold conference contest next Monday before playing three 18-hole matches.

That match will be held at King’s Grant Golf and Country Club, hosted by Pine Forest, and start at 3 p.m.
